Carey Price Recalled From Hamilton
February 4, 2008
The Canadiens have sent Jaraslav Halak back down to Hamilton and recalled our superstar-in-waiting, Carey Price. Price had a hot start to the season but struggled in his last three starts for the Habs before he was sent down to the Bulldogs in early January.
I mentioned earlier that Halak may get the start against Ottawa to give Huet a break after the heavy weekend - maybe Price will get that start? We’ll have to wait and see on that one. Let’s hope he’s back in top form and ready to take the reins as our full-time backup.
Habs Will Overtake Ottawa on Tuesday
February 2, 2008
Alright, I’m getting a bit ahead of myself, but here’s the scoop: Montreal beat the Islanders today while the Maple Leafs downed Ottawa 4-2. That puts the Habs 3 points behind Ottawa with a game in hand as I write this.
Montreal meets the New York Rangers tomorrow and will come within one point of Ottawa with 52 games played apiece if they beat them. That sets Montreal up for a big win against the Senators at home on Tuesday to take a one point lead and first place in the Eastern Conference.
Cross your fingers, but I think we’ve got this one locked.
Brisebois Sidelined Again
January 22, 2008
Patrice Brisebois underwent an MRI yesterday that found two breaks in the defenseman’s left foot. Breezer skated with the team this morning but will obviously miss tonight’s game and a few more at the least while he recovers.
The Numbers Game
January 21, 2008
From Canadiens.com
Here’s a numerical look at the Canadiens-Penguins game on Saturday night at the Bell Centre.
7 - Consecutive number of the games the Canadiens have now allowed under 30 shots. Montreal is 4-2-1 in those games.
5 - Game-high number of blocked shots by Francis Bouillon.
67 - Maxim Lapierre’s faceoff percentage on Saturday night to lead all Habs centers on his way to raising his season average to 50.2 %.
5 - Game-high number of shots registered by Christopher Higgins who continues to lead the team with 148 shots on the season.
26 - Number of candles now birthday boy Mike Komisarek will blow out tonight.
6 - Game-high number of hits thrown by former Penguins forward Tom Kostopoulos, tying him with teammate Komisarek on the night.
14 - Number of games the Canadiens’ second-ranked power-play has failed to score at least one goal in 2007-08. Montreal is 5-6-3 in those contests.
Markov Voted All-Star Starter
January 9, 2008
The starting lines for the 2008 NHL All-Star Game in Atlanta have been announced that out very own breakout defensemen Andrei Markov will be starting for the Eastern Conference! Markov is the only first-time All-Star on the roster this year, making his 316,136 votes a major achievement. Only Sidney Crosby amassed more votes in the East with 507,274.
The 2008 NHL All-Star game takes place in Atlanta, Georgia on January 27th at 6 PM EST.
Habs All-Star Voting
January 3, 2008
Just a reminder to all of you Canadiens fans out there that there is still ample time to vote (often!) for the three guys we have in contention at the moment.
Andrei Markov currently leads all defensemen in the Eastern Conference with 282,336 votes, nearly 50,000 votes ahead of second place Zdeno Chara of Boston.
Christobal Huet ranks third for goalies in the East with 154,198 votes, only a few hundred votes from second place Henrik Lundqvist; Martin Brodeur tops the category with just over 185,000 votes.
Finally we have Saku Koivu ranked 8th among forwards with 103,395 and Alex Kovalev, a write-in candidate, in 12th position in the same category with 62,557 votes.
The All-Star game is in less than a month so get those votes in!
Brisebois Almost Back
January 2, 2008
With the Habs on a roll through their just-ended 6 game road trip, talk of injuries has been on the backburner. While there are no serious scratches, defensemen Patrice Brisebois has been out since December 10th with a shoulder injury, Bryan Smolinski has been out since December 6th with a knee strain, Steve Begin has been out since December with a shoulder injury and rookie Brian O’Byrne will be out for another two weeks with a broken thumb.
Head coach Guy Carbonneau doesn’t want to rush these players back into the lineup despite Brisebois being at the ready as of this morning. Given the Canadiens recent success, I think he’s making the right move. Expect to see Brisebois back in action on Saturday against the Capitals.
